The
Duel In The Sun, that never to be forgotten Open Championship
classic, took place at this course in 1977 establishing Turnberry
forever as a must play for many visitors from both the UK and
overseas. The first staging of the Open over one of the very best
links courses resulted in a narrow Tom Watson victory over Jack
Nicklaus on the final hole after four outstanding days golf.
Over recent years
access to the courses has been predominantly restricted to residents
of the hotel although this policy shows some sign of change and
we are delighted to confirm that the course will be one of the
participating venues for the Ayrshire Golf Classic over the next
three years. The situation of Turnberry on the South West Coast
of Scotland warmed by the Gulf Stream and offering views to Ireland
and the islands of the Clyde Estuary make it one of the countries
most scenic venues. The course itself was originally laid in the
early part of the century by the Marquis of Ailsa and is visually
captured by the classic image of the 9th hole with the lighthouse
in the background. The ninth with its infamous tee is supported
by the famous eighteenth hole and Nicklaus' gorse on the right;
or the daunting approach to sixteen over the Wee Burn.
