Longniddry, East Lothian

Par 68 Parkland/Links Course

irvine.gif (17067 bytes)Longniddry lies at the western end of a chain of famous courses which starts with Dunbar in the east and includes North Berwick, Muirfield, Gullane, Luffness and Kilspindie. Golf was first played in the vicinity of the club more than 400 years ago; indeed Mary Queen of Scots was criticized for playing "over the fields of Seton" shortly after the death of Darnley in 1567.

Harry S Colt designed and built the course in 1921, although James Braid, Mackenzie Ross and most recently Donald Steel have all influenced the layout. The course is quite unique in that it is mainly parkland in a links setting. There are panoramic views over the Firth of Forth to Fife and indeed Edinburgh Castle and the Forth Bridges are (usually) clearly visible.

Although short by modern standards the course is considered a real test, particularly when the wind blows, which may explain why the SSS at 70 is two shots over the par of 68! As expected on this stretch of coastline the clubhouse facilities are excellent and visiting golfers are made most welcome.
