The
Crail Golfing Society is the seventh oldest golf club in the world,
dating back over two hundred years to February 23rd 1786. In 1895,
the club commissioned Tom Morris to design the world renowned Balcomie
Links and this was joined recently by the Craighead Links, created
by American designer Gil Hanse.
Balcomie
Links
Balcomie is a beautiful
course, not overly long, but full of interest and with views of
the sea from every tee. Several of the fairways wind alongside
golden sandy bays and rocky outcrops on the forth foreshore. They
come into play most notably at the fearsome fifth, known as 'Hells
Hole' where the golfer must decide whether to try and carry the
beach or take the easy way round. As befits a classic links, each
of the holes has its own individual character which makes for
a fascinating round of golf. More often than not the golfer will
need to call upon every club in the bag. A warm welcome awaits
in the clubhouse with unsurpassed views from the lounge and dining
room.
Craighead Links
The recently opened
Craighead Links is certainly well up to the standard that members
and guests have come to expect from the Crail Golfing Society.
The course features many of the best aspects of a classic Scottish
links, with panoramic views of the sea and the surrounding countryside.
No two consecutive holes face the same direction and the designer
has created a testing but fair challenge, with wide sweeping fairways
and large greens a prominent feature of the course. It is only
a matter of time before Craighead joins Balcomie as one of the
'must play' courses in Scotland, with excellent facilities complementing
the historic atmosphere.
