Originally
laid out by Willie Campbell in 1891, the course has changed little
down the years. It is one of the few remaining traditional links
courses left in Scotland.
One
of the more famous moments in the Machrie history was its own
Open Championship in 1901 which included the 'Great Triumvirate'
of Harry Vardon, John Henry Taylor and James Braid. It had the
highest prize of any open competition at that time of £100!
Whilst
prize money has changed since then, the course remains very much
the same with the sand dunes providing natural hazards and blind
shots that will challenge many golfers.
Running alongside Laggan Bay and looking out to the Atlantic,
the scenery is stunning and Machrie has been quoted as being one
of the most beautiful golf courses anywhere in the world. With
eight local Islay malts to try after a round, The Machrie is well
worth a visit.
