Murcar
Golf Club was founded in 1909 and lies on the shores of the North
Sea, immediately to the North of Aberdeen.
It
is a typical links course and its 6241 yards with a standard scratch
score of 71, belittles the degree of difficulty which the golfer
will encounter. As with any golf course, the secret of success
is straightness but none more so than on the links of Murcar where
the tee shot must be kept in play or chances of par figures will
soon diminish.
On arriving at Murcar, the visitor could quite easily be lulled
into a false sense of security on viewing the first, second and
eighteenth holes from the car park. These seemingly benign holes
give no hint of what is in store on the other parts of the course.
It
would be futile to attempt to give the appropriate clubs to play
for second shots. It has been known on four consecutive days at
Murcar for the wind to come from four different directions and
any golfer will appreciate that wind direction and strength can
make a mockery of any suggested club selection.
