Massereene
Golf Club was founded as a 9 hole course in 1895 and underwent
many changes before Fred Hawtree laid out the existing course
in 1961. Close to Belfast International Airport, the course runs
along the shores of Lough Neagh, the biggest inland stretch of
water in the British Isles.
The
opening holes on this mainly parkland course wind away from the
clubhouse until the par 5 7th which tumbles downhill to the shoreline
of the lake in the direction of Shane's Castle.
After
the tricky 9th hole one crosses the road to face the teasing inward
half. With a more sandy subsoil mainly along the shoreline the
back nine offers some truly excellent golf holes - the challenging
dog leg par 5 16th bordering the lake, the almost claustrophobic
17th through a tunnel of trees and a testing finishing hole.
